Why it matters

One in five people in the US speaks another language at home

About 22% of people aged 5 and over in the US speak a language other than English at home, and about 61.1% of them speak Spanish. When staff use the register in the language they read best, training is faster and mistakes with modifiers, discounts and change are rarer.

In the UAE and Pakistan

UAE shop teams commonly mix Arabic, English, Hindi, Urdu, Malayalam and Tagalog. In Pakistan, most shopkeepers read Urdu in Nastaliq script every day, which is why our Urdu pages use a Nastaliq font.

Multi-country POS

Four layers

Where language is set

Interface, per user

Each user chooses their language in their profile. A technician can work in Vietnamese while the front desk uses English on the same account.

Receipts, per location

Invoice layouts set the labels printed on receipts. Create one per language, or a bilingual layout such as Arabic and English side by side.

Online store

Product names and store labels appear in the language you set. The managed website can be fully bilingual.

Your own words

Custom translations let you change any word in the interface to match how your trade talks. Your edits survive updates.

Right to left, done properly

In Arabic and Urdu the whole layout mirrors: menus sit on the right, arrows point the other way, text aligns right. Numbers, prices and barcodes still read left to right inside the text, the way people write them.

Language questions

  1. 01What is a multilingual POS?

A multilingual POS lets staff use the register in their own language and print receipts in the customer's. In SmartPOS the interface language is set per user and the receipt language per invoice layout.

  2. 02Can different staff use different languages?

Yes. Language is set per user, so a mixed team can share one account and one set of reports.

  3. 03Can a receipt show two languages?

Yes. Create a bilingual invoice layout, for example Arabic and English, or Spanish and English.

  4. 04Is Arabic and Urdu right to left?

Yes. The interface mirrors for right-to-left languages while numbers, prices and barcodes stay readable.

  5. 05What if a word is translated badly?

Edit it in custom translations. Your version replaces the default everywhere.

  6. 06Which languages are available?

The software ships with many translations, including Spanish, Arabic, Urdu, Chinese, Vietnamese, Korean and Hindi, and you can add others. This website is in English, Spanish, Arabic and Urdu; each edition site adds its trade's languages.

  7. 07Is support available in my language?

Support answers in English, Spanish, Arabic and Urdu. For other languages, we use your edition site's translations and written replies.

  8. 08Can product names be in two languages?

Yes. Add the second name in the product description or a custom field and include it on the receipt layout.
